Instruction. A death in a locked study had been ruled a suicide within forty-eight hours. Single gunshot wound to the right temple, firearm beside the hand, residue on the hand. The referral recorded suspicion and gave no evidentiary basis for it. I was asked whether the ruling was supported by the record.

Material. I was provided the scene photographs and measurements, the building system logs, the laboratory reports, and the financial records. 

Findings. The high velocity spatter on the south wall carried a void. A void of that size and position is produced by a body standing between the source and the wall. Blood recovered from the underside of the desk did not originate from the deceased. Building system data placed an air exchange at the study door inside the window of the discharge. Chair position and wound track were both inconsistent with the recoil and geometry of a self-inflicted shot in the posture the ruling assumed. A large transfer left the deceased's account minutes before the estimated time of death.

Limits. None of these findings identified a person. The void established presence and approximate position. The blood established a second source. Identification followed from work I did not perform.

Outcome. The suicide determination was set aside. The matter was reclassified and reopened and went to prosecution.
